He visto, oído y aprendido.

ENGLISH:

Velo-city, the biggest cycling event on the planet.

If the world would run a little slower, we would all be happier. Lowering our daily rhythm a couple of revolutions can be a good starting point, so from a long time I choose the bicycle and from the very beginning sustainable mobility notions I had received there was a word in the mouth of everyone: Velo-city. The biggest event in the sector, celebrated every year in a place of the globe and undoubtedly has becomed The Mecca of the world cycling.

Four days of conferences with a brutal intensity combining sessions, events, panel discussions, workshops, activities, contacts and good networking, with a lot of face to face. This year was in the Netherlands, Arnhem and Nijmegen, two beautiful cities almost on the border with Germany. It was time to attend for the first time and try to make my most of this opportunity.

I have made excellent contacts with technical representatives like me from other city networks in Denmark, Germany, Finland and France, with the idea in my head of a memorandum of collaboration and sharing goog practices with them, and making interesting connections with city councils in South America and Australia, facing to possible future collaborations. It was amazing to spend a few hours chatting with a chinese woman about public bike sharing systems, with a polish man about cycling associations, with english man about the ability to influence the elections, with a french woman about how supra-municipal organizations can make it better if they are more open or with a dutch man of the infinite possibilities that we can achieve if we masterfully mixing public entities, companies, media and users. Public relations and communication, my favorite things.

I flew with one hundred cards and returned with zero. People greeted me on the street like we were friends for a long time. I love to talk to everyone. I can’t help it! I have seen, heard and learned. And when they asked me, I have participated. After so many days using only English, forget about simultaneous translation at this type of congress, I even dreamed in the language of Shakespeare. From these lines I also throw a hug to all the people of the European Cyclists’ Federation, who have treated us so good..

I return home in love with both cities, their parks, their people, their infrastructures, their logical schedules, their incredible multitudinous events and, of course, the bike I walked their streets with. A week later I write this column from the plane on the way home, as we take off from Schiphol through the clouds and the Interstellar soundtrack blaring through my headphones. Something that should be mandatory to do at least once in life. Like attending Velo-city, of course.
